Project purpose

Moving UWA towards Education 3.0 through video to new pedagogical models in development where:

  • students become the co-creators of their learning
  • effective, fast, timely feedback assumes even greater importance for learning
  • moving images become increasingly important for learning and engagement
  • technology is mobile and participative

Project outline

The use of video for multiple educational purposes continues to grow in higher education. Research evidence suggests that video helps to improve students' engagement, improve learning outcomes, help increase knowledge transfer and increase overall achievement.

UWA students are "prosumers" of video; they wish to produce as well as consume for assignments, blogs and team work. Therefore, a capability for the management, enhanced workflow automation, publishing and distribution of online media is essential to the sustainable delivery of blended courses expected by UWA's current and future students.

During 2017, the Shooting Stars Initiative will deliver a range of small-scale but potentially highly significant and scalable projects which are proposed to point the way to the viable and preferred deployment of video education at UWA.

Projects

Enabling digital environment for media management for students and staff

Project outline/ purpose

The technical infrastructure for managing video content at UWA is not meeting current or future needs. A new integrated multifunctional platform is required to provide a content management system that is optimised for the capture, storage and access of video learning and teaching resources.

Currently, staff rely on a patchwork approach to video ranging from the Lecture Capture System (LCS), video sharing sites like YouTube, and uploading videos directly to UWA’s online Learning Management System (LMS). Students at UWA are not provided with any systems for managing their video content for their learning development or assessment. Currently, they rely on using their own YouTube account, uploading files directly to the LMS, or submitting videos on a disk. The use of external video sharing sites raises issues of privacy, access and ownership.

A modern, flexible, mobile enabled and constantly developing technical platform is needed — a new Video Management Platform (VMP) to be integrated with the current UWA digital platforms.

Guiding principles for the use of video at UWA

Project outline/ purpose

UWA guidelines are needed to:

  • enable and support student and staff creation, distribution, findability and shareability, and use of media across all UWA educational activities
  • support sharing and findability of video-based learning materials
  • ensure appropriate handling of protected and unprotected content with respect to copyright and performance permissions for educational purposes

In addition, support for new learning models and frameworks such as flipped classrooms and labs and mobile-blend will be introduced to integrate and maximise the benefits of video.

Support materials and professional development for staff and students will be needed to inform and offer development to meet the guidelines.

Establishment of a new media creation studio for staff and students

Project outline/ purpose

Currently, there are no media facilities at UWA that are available to all students, and limited facilities for staff, so there is an opportunity to address current needs, as well as positioning UWA to meet future needs as staff and students explore the use of video in their teaching and learning.

At present, UWA students who undertake units that require the development of video content experience difficulties gaining access to suitable facilities and the equipment required to complete their coursework. Many also lack the technical skills required to use the equipment to produce a reasonably high-quality video.

Shooting Stars Project 3 will enable the refurbishment of the previously used SPICE Project studio so that it is accessible and usable by all staff and students. By leveraging the existing studio equipment (lighting, sound proofing) and implementing an automated 'one button' style studio setup, all staff and students, regardless of technical capabilities or level of expertise, will have the capability to record quality audio and video content.

Redevelopment of the staff Media Room in Hacket Hall

Project outline/ purpose

At the end of 2015, the Centre for Education Futures launched the Media Room — a user-friendly facility for staff to use when recording teaching and learning video materials. The facility also provides staff with access to both entry-level and high-end media editing software. Since the start of 2016, more than 243 videos have been produced in the Media Room by staff from across all faculties in UWA, many of them linked into Carpe Diem redesigns. As the popularity of the facility has increased, however, so has the need for hands-on support by learning technologists.

The aim of this project is to build on lessons learned over the past year to improve and streamline the operations of the Media Room, making it more user-friendly and sustainable.

Video feedback for assessment

Project outline

Project 5 intends to pilot the use of video as a method of providing feedback on student assignments. There is growing research evidence that feedback delivered by video or audio is received and acted upon better by students and saves academic staff time. The purpose of the pilot will be to:

  • establish workflows for the delivery of video feedback
  • identify issues or hurdles
  • gauge efficiency of video feedback
  • gauge student response to video feedback

This will be a CEF-led project complementing the Assessment and Feedback Futures Project (AFFP).

A number of unit coordinators interested in piloting will be recruited and supported.

Timeline

This project is reliant on the implementation of the new enterprise video management system (EVMS). It will run throughout Semester 2, 2017.

360 video for MOOCs

Project outline — Prototype 1

Prototype 1 for development of Shooting Stars Project 6 will be in collaboration with the 'Future Farms 2050' MOOC team. The team will produce a series of 360 videos. These videos will provide a unique experience for MOOC participants and provide an opportunity for staff to develop their knowledge of using the specialised equipment and software required to develop this type of video, as well as exploring the potential benefits 360 has over standard video.

Prototype 2 — 360 Video Enhancing Clinical Communication

Prototype 2 for Shooting Stars Project 6 will be "Clinical Yarning" Education: Enhancing Clinical Communication between Health Science Students and Aboriginal Patients.

Students will be provided with opportunities for in-context, experiential learning in a virtual environment. 360 video development will allow students to connect with Aboriginal culture in ways previously unavailable, such as learning firsthand from community members about Aboriginal culture, the power of 'yarning' and its significance in the Health and Social Sciences. The 360 videos will be made available online through the UWA LMS creating a flexible and mobile learning environment for students.

Through 360 recorded simulation activities and case scenarios, students will gain feedback about the progress and development of their communication and interpersonal skills, both of which are vital in bridging the gap between Aboriginal patients and practitioners.
